Peer-to-peer (P2P) file sharing is a type of communication that uses BitTorrent. It is a way to disseminate massive amounts of data to a wide audience without having to pay the full cost of hardware, hosting, and bandwidth resources. Programmer Bram Cohen implemented the protocol and released it for the first time on July 2, 2001. BitTorrent, Inc. is now responsible for maintaining the protocol. Its advantage over plain HTTP is that when multiple downloaders are simultaneously accessing the same file, they upload to one another. This allows the file source to support very large numbers of downloaders with only a slight increase in load.
